About Reb Zev
Rabbi Dr. Zev Wellins offers over 35 years of professional rabbinic experience, with extensive knowledge and expertise in the areas of Jewish spirituality, chaplaincy, adult education, and life cycle ceremonies.
A dynamic public speaker and educator, the Rabbi has also worked to promote community harmony and understanding through his involvement in interfaith community relations. “Reb Zev” is a highly skilled and experienced Chaplain, with specialized training in grief and life crisis counseling. He offers a unique, deeply sensitive, and meaningful approach to death and dying for those challenged by end of life issues. His certified skills in spiritual pastoral care are available to individuals, hospitals, healthcare facilities, hospice programs, state prisons and local municipal police and fire rescue departments.
A teacher and advocate of Spiritual Judaism, Dr. Wellins has written many new uplifting liturgies which provide a fresh approach to Jewish worship and conducting life-cycle ceremonies. He personalizes and enhances the experience of life-event rituals by encouraging creative input from the participants. A proponent of giving meaningful religious sanction to interfaith relationships for over three decades, the Rabbi has become nationally known for his insightful marriage counseling, creative interfaith wedding ceremonies and his innovative approach to Jewish rituals and learning.
Rabbi Zev received his Doctor of Divinity from The Rabbinical Academy in New York. He studied Rabbinics at the Academy for Jewish Religion and Tifereth Israel Rabbinical Academy of America in New York. He received his Teacher’s and Principal’s Certification from Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion in New York. Studied in Hebrew, Arabic, and Yiddish literature, he graduated The City College of New York, Department of Classical Languages and Literature and attended New York University Graduate School of Mid-Eastern Studies.
The Rabbi is on the faculty of The Rabbinical Academy in New York, is a member of the National Association of Jewish Chaplains, and is Vice-President of the International Federation of Rabbis. He has served as Jewish Chaplain, Rabbinic Advisor and Educational Consultant for local area Hospitals, Hospice By-The-Sea (FL), Hospice of the Valley (AZ) and Hospice Care of Southeast Florida. He continues to devote time and energy to writing articles of Jewish interest for both local and national publications, as well as continuing his work in Jewish liturgy and philosophy. Rabbi Zev Wellins is Executive Director of The Center for Spiritual Judaism, a non-profit community foundation dedicated to providing rabbinic services, including: outreach chaplaincy, adult education, spiritual counseling, and life cycle ceremonies in the Houston, Texas area.
